Arriving in Ella by train is one of travel's genuine set-pieces: the blue train curves across the Nine Arch Bridge through curtains of mist and emerald tea while passengers lean from open doors. The tiny houses, A-frames and bamboo cabins around Ella occupy the hillsides above and below the village — many have private balconies looking straight down over the valley toward the coast, 200 km south. Mornings are cool enough for a sweater; by noon the sun burns the mist off the tea gardens and the temperature climbs to a pleasant 24–26 °C.
December through March is the hill country's dry season — clear views, manageable trails, and the full spectacle of Ella Rock's ridge walk without slipping on wet clay. The tiny-house hosts here are mostly local families and small eco-operators, keeping the atmosphere personal. Teahouses are minutes away on foot; Little Adam's Peak is a 45-minute sunrise climb from the village edge.

What is the best time of year to stay in Ella?
December to March is the driest season in the hill country: sunny mornings, clear mountain views, and comfortable temperatures of 20–26 °C. July and August can be pleasant too, but expect more cloud and the occasional heavy rain from the southwest monsoon.
How do I get to Ella?
The famous hill-country train from Kandy takes 5–6 hours; from Colombo the journey is around 6 hours, passing through Nanu Oya and Haputale. Book train tickets well in advance — observation-car seats sell out weeks ahead during peak season.
Are the tiny houses and cabins in Ella suitable for budget travellers?
Yes — Ella has one of Sri Lanka's widest ranges of small cabin and treehouse accommodation, from budget bamboo huts to polished A-frames with mountain views. The hill-country setting keeps costs lower than coastal resorts.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
