Tiny houses in the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are an unusual entry on a tiny house site, and worth being upfront about: we've verified exactly one stay so far, a tiny house on Streymoy, the largest of the eighteen islands and home to the capital, Tórshavn. It's a small start rather than a full guide to the archipelago, but the islands themselves are dramatic enough that even a single stay is worth knowing about.

Streymoy sits at the heart of an archipelago built almost entirely from sheer volcanic cliffs, grass-topped ridges and narrow fjords, with waterfalls that drop straight into the sea and villages of a few dozen turf-roofed houses tucked into the folds of the land. Sheep vastly outnumber people here, and the weather can shift from bright sun to thick fog within the hour — part of the appeal for anyone drawn to a wilder, weather-shaped landscape.

A tiny house is arguably the right building for the setting: small, weathertight, easy to heat, and unobtrusive against a landscape that doesn't need decoration. It's the kind of base that suits day trips to the archipelago's hiking trails and coastal viewpoints rather than a resort-style stay.

May to September is the sensible window, when daylight stretches long and conditions are calmest for hiking and exploring the cliffs; outside that, weather turns more unpredictable.
