Tiny houses in Vietnam

Ninh Binh's rice paddies sit between the same dramatic limestone karsts that make Halong Bay famous, but on dry land — sampan boats punt through the caves and river channels at Trang An and Tam Coc, and Hoa Lu nearby was once Vietnam's ancient capital. It has become one of the country's most-photographed landscapes, easily reached as a day trip or overnight from Hanoi.

Mai Chau, further west in the mountains of Hòa Bình province, is a quieter valley of rice terraces and stilt-house villages belonging to the White Thai ethnic community — known for homestays and gentle cycling rather than boat rides through karst scenery.

Phong Nha, further south in Quang Binh province, is the gateway to some of the largest cave systems on Earth, at the heart of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang UNESCO World Heritage Site — a valley of rice paddies and karst peaks along the Son River. We've verified two waterside and hillside A-frame bungalows here so far, built for two to six guests, with cave tours, cycling tracks and water buffalo in the fields right outside the door.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island off the southern coast, has a busy resort strip on its west side, but Ong Lang and Cua Can to the north are quieter — pepper plantations, orchards and sand facing the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. So far we've verified a single family-run garden bungalow there, a first foothold rather than a real cluster.

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months across the north, avoiding the summer heat and heaviest rains; Mai Chau's valley floor stays pleasant slightly later into the season thanks to its altitude, and Phong Nha and Phu Quoc further south run milder and drier from December to March.
