Tiny house summer holidays: 931 stays by lakes and coasts

This collection is for one kind of trip: a week or two in summer, in a small house of your own, close to water. It brings together 931 tiny houses, cabins and huts in 116 lake, coast and island destinations across 27 countries. You rent the whole building, not a hotel room, so breakfast happens on your own step and there is nobody on the other side of the wall.

Only destinations north of the tropics are in. Stays in the southern hemisphere and in the tropics are left out on purpose, because their summers and their wet and dry seasons run on a different calendar. The lakeside and seaside collections cover those places too, worldwide. Every house here passed the same check as the rest of the atlas: free-standing, yours alone, no more than six guests and fewer than four bedrooms.

Summer by the water is booked early. There are only so many small houses with a shoreline nearby, and everybody wants the same weeks. July and August go first, and school holidays decide which weeks. In the Netherlands the 2027 summer holidays run from 10 July in the north, 17 July in the middle and 24 July in the south; in France they start on Saturday 3 July. The table further down lists the Dutch dates. If you travel with school-age children, book as soon as the dates are fixed rather than in spring.

June and September are the quieter months. Houses are easier to get and often cheaper, and in September the lake has had the whole summer to warm up, which it has not in early June. The North Sea and the Atlantic stay cool even in July, so if swimming is the point, a lake is the safer bet; on those coasts the wind and a stove or heating matter outside July and August.

Read the listing before you count on anything. A jetty, a rowing boat, a sauna or a hot tub is part of a stay only if the listing says so. Lakes bring mosquitoes in the evening, so look for screens on the windows and doors or pack repellent. With children, count the sleeping places, not just the guest number: a sofa bed in the living room is a different night than a separate bed. The booking page shows the exact position on a map, so you can see how far the water really is. Across the 927 stays with a price on file, the median is €170 a night, and half of them cost between €120 and €246.
