Tiny houses in Zeeland near Domburg

Domburg grew up as a fishing village and became Zeeland's first seaside resort in the 19th century, one of the older bathing towns in the Netherlands. The old core has stayed small: a market square, narrow streets, shops run by the same families for generations. Beyond the dune line the beach opens wide and pale, marked by wooden groynes, the paalhoofden, and rows of pastel-coloured beach huts.

Zoutelande and Westkapelle, west and south along the coast, share the same dune ridge and North Sea exposure; the wind is usually out of the southwest, and both villages are known today for surfing and kitesurfing rather than calm swimming. Inland the land flattens out completely, and a dense, signed cycle network links the villages, orchards, and polders.

Veere, a walled Hanseatic town on the Veerse Meer, is about 20 minutes by car and worth it for the step-gabled town hall and a harbour lined with old merchant houses. Further east, the Oosterscheldekering closes off the Eastern Scheldt: nine kilometres of barrier on 65 concrete pillars, with 62 steel gates that stay open under normal conditions and shut only when a storm surge threatens. It opened in 1986, the last major piece of the Delta Works built after the 1953 flood.

The season runs roughly April to October. July and August are busiest on the beaches; May, June, and September bring quieter dunes and lighter traffic on the coastal roads. Rotterdam is about 100 km away, roughly 1.5 hours by car. Antwerp is closer, around 95 km and just over an hour.
