North of Venlo, between the Maas and the German border, runs the longest belt of river dunes in the Netherlands, protected as De Maasduinen National Park: pine woods, heath, drift sand and small fens such as the Reindersmeer, with signed walking and cycling routes. Arcen sits on the riverbank at its southern edge, with the Kasteeltuinen, a garden park around the old castle, and the Thermaalbad Arcen, which is fed by mineral water from a deep spring. Walks along the Maas start in the village itself. Venlo is about 15 km away and Düsseldorf roughly 70 km, so the area is a short drive from the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr.
