Naivasha is one of the Rift Valley's freshwater lakes, ringed by acacia woodland and famous for its resident hippo pods and the giraffes, zebras and buffalo that wander down to the shoreline — wildlife-watching here happens largely on foot or by boat, at a fraction of the cost and crowding of the bigger safari parks. It sits at high altitude for the tropics, which keeps the climate mild year-round rather than sweltering.

The stay we have verified here is a set of wooden cabins with two bedrooms — a straightforward, family-sized base for lake outings rather than a luxury safari lodge. Nearby Hell's Gate National Park is one of the few African parks where you can walk or cycle among the wildlife, framed by dramatic gorges and geothermal steam vents.
