Tiny House Atlas

Tiny houses in Uruguay

Uruguay's tiny-house map sits entirely on the Rocha coast, where plain wooden cabins run from the surf town of Punta del Diablo through artsy La Pedrera to the off-grid dunes of Cabo Polonio.

All 31 of Uruguay's verified stays sit in Rocha, the department holding the country's wildest stretch of Atlantic coast, and every single one is a cabin — no domes, no tipis, nothing else. What changes from town to town is the atmosphere.

Punta del Diablo carries the most, eighteen of thirty-one. Once a small fishing village, it's grown into a laid-back surf and backpacker hub, but the accommodation has stayed true to its roots — small wooden cabañas along sandy streets rather than resort blocks, busiest with young Uruguayans and Argentines through the summer.

La Pedrera, with nine, is the quieter and more design-conscious neighbour, its cabins perched on low cliffs above the Atlantic and closely linked to the lighthouse town of La Paloma next door. It draws an artsier crowd than Punta del Diablo, though the format is the same — wooden cabins rather than anything more built-up.

Cabo Polonio and nearby Valizas hold the last four, and they're the most distinctive stretch of coast in the country. Cabo Polonio is a protected nature reserve with no paved road and, for most of its history, no power grid — the only way in is on foot or by a specialised truck crossing the dunes, and the reward is a rocky point with one of South America's largest sea lion colonies. Valizas sits beside the continent's tallest shifting sand dune. Cabins here typically run on solar panels or generators rather than mains electricity, genuinely off-grid rather than rustic-themed. Across all three towns the season is the same: December to March, the southern hemisphere summer when Uruguay's Atlantic coast is at its warmest and busiest, with prices averaging around 60 euros a night. Access is via Montevideo, a few hours by car or bus along Ruta 10 — though the last stretch into Cabo Polonio always means swapping your own car for that truck.

Good to know

Are these tiny houses or cabins?

All 31 verified stays in Uruguay are wooden cabins (cabañas) — there are no domes or other formats here, just varying levels of rustic finish depending on the town.

What's special about Cabo Polonio?

It's a protected reserve with no paved road and historically no power grid — you reach it on foot or by specialised truck over the dunes, and cabins run on solar power or generators. It's genuinely off-grid, not just styled that way.

When should I visit Uruguay's coast?

December to March, the southern hemisphere summer, when all three towns — Punta del Diablo, La Pedrera and Cabo Polonio — are at their warmest and liveliest.

How much does a cabin cost?

Around 60 euros a night on average, making Rocha's coast one of the more affordable stretches on this list.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
