Kyrgyzstan's verified stays are felt yurts around Issyk-Kul, the vast alpine lake ringed by the Tian Shan mountains — small, family-run camps on the quiet south shore and at the trekking base of Karakol on the lake's east end, rather than hotels.

Issyk-Kul is the second-largest alpine lake in the world and one of the few large lakes that never freezes despite the altitude and the snow peaks around it. The south shore, quieter and less developed than the resort towns on the north side, runs past the villages of Bokonbayevo, Kaji-Say and Tong, with the sandstone spires of Skazka — Fairytale — Canyon a short drive inland.
The nine yurt camps we've verified here are small family operations rather than tour-company setups — traditional felt yurts for two to five guests, some with a private bathroom and shower, others sharing a camp bathhouse, spread across the shoreline villages and up into the Kek-Sai valley.
At the lake's east end, Karakol is the region's trekking base, gateway to the Terskey Ala-Too range and the turquoise Ala-Kul lake at 3,500 metres. The eight yurts we've verified here sit in and around town, below the red rock spires of Jeti-Ögüz — the Seven Bulls — and up in the Altyn-Arashan valley, where hikers off the Ala-Kul trail soak in open-air hot springs. Camps here range from a single family yurt for two to a whole yurt sleeping up to five, some with their own bathroom, others sharing a camp one.
June to September is the season across both shores — mountain passes and the Ala-Kul trail are open, the lake is warm enough to swim, and most camps close outside these months. Bokonbayevo is also the base for the region's Kyrgyz eagle hunters, who still hunt with golden eagles on the steppe above the lake and demonstrate the tradition for visitors passing through. Our verified selection now covers the lake's south shore and its eastern trekking base around Karakol — two footholds in a country with a great deal more still to check.

Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.

By road, roughly five to six hours depending on the route and which village you're headed to — either around the eastern end of the lake or through the Boom Gorge to the north shore first.
Karakol is roughly six to seven hours by road from Bishkek, at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul. It's the trailhead for the Ala-Kul trek, a two-to-three-day route to a turquoise glacial lake at 3,500 metres, and for day trips to Jeti-Ögüz, known for its red sandstone Seven Bulls rock formation.
June to September, when mountain passes are open and the lake is warm enough to swim. Most yurt camps close for the rest of the year.
A small cluster of traditional felt yurts, usually family-run, sleeping two to five guests each. Bathrooms are sometimes private, sometimes a shared camp bathhouse.
A nomadic hunting tradition still practised around Bokonbayevo on the lake's south shore, where hunters train golden eagles to hunt on the open steppe.
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
