Tiny houses in Romania

Bran and Moeciu, in the shadow of Piatra Craiului, are the busiest of the group — Bran Castle's link to the Dracula legend has made it Romania's best-known tourist draw, but the villages around it are quiet, farm-dotted valleys good for hiking straight into the mountains. Păltiniș, above the medieval city of Sibiu, is Romania's oldest mountain resort, a base for both hiking and modest winter skiing.

Maramureș, further north, is a different Romania: a region of wooden churches (several inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage), horse carts still used on working farms, and villages that have kept a slower, older rhythm of life. The Apuseni Mountains, in the country's west, add a single karst-country cabin, in a region known for caves and gorges rather than peaks.

May to September is the easiest season for hiking across all these regions; December to March brings snow to Bran, Moeciu and Păltiniș.
