Deal is a shingle-beach town of Georgian seafront houses and one of Henry VIII’s squat artillery castles, built when invasion looked likely in 1539. Sandwich, three miles north, was a Cinque Port until its harbour silted up and left it stranded inland with its medieval street plan intact.
