The Mackenzie Basin is one of those landscapes you remember before you've even left — the turquoise of Lake Tekapo against tawny tussock grass and a wall of snow-capped peaks that includes Aoraki/Mount Cook. Tiny houses and designer cabins here are built low and dark to preserve the night sky of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the largest such reserves on earth. The resident observatory runs evening stargazing programmes open to guests.
Summer (November–March) is prime for hiking in Mount Cook NP and swimming in Lake Pukaki's glacier-fed water. Winter stays are cold but clear, with skifields at Ohau and Roundhill within easy reach. The thermal hot pools at Lake Tekapo township are a year-round ritual after a day on the hills — plan for a soak whatever the season.

Expect modern, architect-designed cabins with large windows positioned for mountain or lake views, built with minimal exterior lighting to protect the Dark Sky Reserve status.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
