Big Bear works in every season: in winter you ski groomed runs at Snow Summit in the morning and return to a wood-burning stove and a hot tub in a snow-dusted A-frame by afternoon; in summer the same cabin becomes a base for kayaking Big Bear Lake, mountain biking through San Bernardino National Forest, and watching the Perseid meteor shower from a deck with almost no light pollution. The tiny-house scene here is well-developed — properties range from cosy one-room cabins on wooded lots to modern glass A-frames with lake views. Because Big Bear is only two hours from Los Angeles, weekends book up fast, especially in ski season.
The village itself is genuinely charming: a main street with pancake houses, gear shops and a lakeside promenade worth a slow evening walk. Dogs are widely welcome and hiking trails from the door are common, making it a strong pick for travellers with pets. Snow access in winter requires chains or an AWD vehicle — check conditions before departure.

Good to know
Does Big Bear have enough to do outside ski season?
Yes — summer brings kayaking and paddleboarding on Big Bear Lake, mountain biking in San Bernardino National Forest, and clear-sky stargazing, while autumn draws visitors for golden aspen foliage and cool-weather hiking.
How do I get to Big Bear Lake from Los Angeles?
Big Bear is about 2 hours from central Los Angeles by car via Highway 18 or 138. In winter, snow chains or a 4WD/AWD vehicle are often required on the mountain roads — check Caltrans conditions before you leave.
Are tiny houses at Big Bear dog-friendly?
Many properties explicitly welcome dogs, and the surrounding national forest has miles of trails suitable for all sizes — just confirm the pet policy directly with the host before booking.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
