Tiny House Atlas

Tiny houses in Kaʻū & Ocean View (Big Island)

The Big Island’s empty southern flank runs from the green-sand beaches of South Point up to the sweeping lava lands of Ocean View — a remote, dark-sky corner where off-grid yurts and tiny cabins sit on cheap volcanic acreage far from any resort.

Climate

Warm, dry lava coast; some of Hawaii’s darkest skies.

Kaʻū is the Big Island's forgotten corner — a huge, thinly populated district running down the southern flank of Mauna Loa to Ka Lae, the southernmost point in the United States. Land is cheap and the grid is far off, so what you find here are off-grid yurts and simple cabins on open lava acreage, running on solar and catchment tanks, with almost nothing between you and the stars. This is some of the darkest sky in Hawaii.

The draw is space and silence rather than resort polish. Ocean View and Nāʻālehu are the service towns; from a yurt out here you can drive to the green-sand beach at Papakōlea, the black sand and basking turtles at Punaluʻu, or up to the national park in about an hour. Bring supplies — restaurants are few and far between — and expect warm, dry days on this leeward coast after the cool of the uplands.

Good to know

What kind of tiny houses are in the Kaʻū district?

Mostly off-grid yurts and simple cabins on cheap volcanic land — solar-powered, catchment-water setups built for couples who want quiet and dark skies rather than resort amenities.

Is Kaʻū a good area for stargazing?

Exceptionally. It's one of the least light-polluted parts of Hawaii, with wide-open lava land and clear leeward skies; many of the yurts are set up specifically so you can watch the Milky Way from bed.

How far is Kaʻū from the beaches and the volcano?

The green-sand beach at South Point and the black-sand beach at Punaluʻu are both a short drive away; Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is about an hour, and Kona airport (KOA) is around 90 minutes.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
