Åland is Finland's odd one out — an autonomous, Swedish-speaking archipelago of some 6,700 islands scattered in the strait between Stockholm and Turku, with its own flag, its own postage stamps and a neutrality written into international treaties going back to the 1920s. Out here the tiny-house scene is really just red-painted stugor and timber cottages sitting at the water's edge, the kind of place families have kept for generations rather than built as a business.

A small, mostly car-free network of free inter-island ferries links the outer islets, so a cottage stay on Åland tends to mean bicycles, packed lunches and slow hops between skerries rather than driving everywhere. Mariehamn, the pocket-sized capital, and the medieval Kastelholm Castle are easy day trips, and Föglö is a favourite for a longer detour by boat. Summers are short and bright rather than hot — pack for changeable weather even in July — and the archipelago empties out again once the light starts to fade in early autumn.
