Climate

Subarctic mountain; snowy winters.

Åre is the kind of mountain town where the seasons are almost equally compelling — in winter, red and ochre stugas appear against deep snow and the ski lifts run from village level; in July, the same hillsides turn green and wildflower-carpeted, with mountain bikers threading down the same pistes. Tiny houses and timber cabins here tend to sit just above the village or along the lakeshore, close enough to walk to bars and rental shops but far enough to feel genuinely quiet. Tännforsen, Sweden's widest waterfall, is only a short drive and worth combining with a morning hike.

The overnight train from Stockholm drops you in Åre without airport faff — a genuinely enjoyable 6-hour journey — and most cabin operators are well set up for dog owners, with plenty of lead-free fell terrain nearby. The subarctic mountain climate means evenings cool off sharply in both seasons, so the woodfire stove earns its place.

Good to know

When is the best time to visit Åre in a tiny house or stuga?

Winter (December–April) is peak ski season with reliable snow; summer (June–September) offers long days, mountain biking and hiking with fewer crowds — both seasons work well, so it depends on whether you want snow or green valleys.

How do I get to Åre from Stockholm?

The overnight train from Stockholm Central takes around six hours and arrives right in Åre village — a comfortable journey that skips the airport entirely and lets you wake up in the mountains.

Are tiny houses and cabins in Åre suitable for dogs?

Many cabin operators in Åre explicitly welcome dogs, and the surrounding fells offer extensive off-lead walking away from the ski runs — always confirm pet policies when booking, as some properties near the village have restrictions.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
