Mild coastal climate; warm summers.
Österlen, Skåne's artist and apple coast around Kivik, pairs whitewashed fishing villages with the long, wide beach at Sandhammaren and the Bronze Age stone ship at Ales Stenar, a circle of standing stones perched on a clifftop above the Baltic. It's Sweden's south, so the landscape reads differently from the country's forested interior: rolling farmland, apple orchards around Kivik, and a coastline of chalk cliffs and open sand rather than granite skerries.
The region has drawn painters and craftspeople for generations, and small galleries and ceramics studios dot the villages between the cabins. Cycling is the natural way to see it — flat lanes link the orchards, beaches and Ales Stenar — with beach days at Sandhammaren and browsing the Kivik apple orchards filling out a slower week. Malmö is close enough, an hour away, for an easy city day trip.

Why book through the atlas
Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.
Your booking completes on Booking.com or Vrbo at their price. The atlas earns a small commission, at no cost to you.
Good to know
What is Ales Stenar?
A Bronze Age stone ship formation — 59 standing stones arranged in the outline of a ship on a clifftop above the sea near Kåseberga, one of Sweden's most striking ancient monuments and a short walk from parking.
What's Österlen best known for?
Its mix of art — the region has attracted painters for over a century, with galleries scattered through the villages — apple orchards around Kivik, and a stretch of coastline that runs from chalk cliffs to the long open beach at Sandhammaren.
Is a car necessary?
It helps, though Österlen is compact and flat enough for cycling between villages, beaches and Ales Stenar; Malmö, an hour away, is easily reached by car or regional train.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
