Värmland is Selma Lagerlöf's home province — a quiet expanse of forest and lakes around Sunne, where the Nobel-winning author set much of her writing and where the Klarälven river still carries self-built timber rafts downstream, a tradition tourists can join for a multi-day float. Solitary wooden stugas sit deep in the woods here rather than clustered in villages, which is the whole appeal: genuine distance from anything resembling a crowd.
Days here run slow: elk safaris at dusk, swimming off a lake dock, or a visit to Mårbacka, Lagerlöf's old estate, and the landscaped gardens of Rottneros Park nearby. It's forest Sweden rather than coastal Sweden — pine and spruce, still lakes, and cabins built for reading by a woodstove as much as for summer swimming. Karlstad, the regional hub, is 2 hours away; Stockholm is a longer 4-hour drive.

What is log rafting on the Klarälven?
Visitors can build or join a simple timber raft and float down the Klarälven over several days, camping on the riverbank at night — a slow, old-fashioned way to see the forest from the water.
