Bohuslän's granite skerry coast, around Fjällbacka and Smögen, is where red sjöbod boathouses have quietly turned into some of Sweden's most sought-after cabin stays. The coastline is bare pink-grey rock rather than sand, dropping straight into the water, with narrow channels between the islands that make it prime territory for sea kayaking.
This is a summer coast built around the water: crayfish season each August turns into something close to a local festival, and long June evenings stay light enough to swim well past nine. A sjöbod cabin puts you a few steps from a jetty rather than a beach, close to Smögen's boardwalk and Fjällbacka's harbor, with Kosterhavet National Park's marine reserve a short boat trip further north. Gothenburg, an hour and a half south, makes a good bookend for a longer trip.

A sjöbod is a traditional red-painted wooden boathouse built right at the water's edge — many along the Bohuslän coast have been converted into small cabin-style stays, so you're typically a few steps from your own jetty rather than a beach.
Is Bohuslän good for swimming?
Yes, though it's rock rather than sand — the water is clean and clear, and locals swim straight off the granite skerries. Expect it to be genuinely warm only from June to August.
What's the crayfish safari about?
It's a Bohuslän tradition tied to the August crayfish season — boat trips that combine catching crayfish with an evening meal on the water, one of the coast's signature summer activities.
