The High Coast, or Höga Kusten, is Sweden's UNESCO World Heritage shoreline — land here is still rising out of the Baltic faster than almost anywhere else on Earth, the long aftereffect of the ice age's weight lifting off the bedrock. Red-painted stugas and old boathouses sit right down by the water near villages like Docksta, with Skuleskogen National Park's rocky, wind-bent pine forest just behind them.
The coastline here is dramatic rather than flat — cliffs, ravines and a scatter of pine-covered islands, crossed by the striking Höga Kustenbron suspension bridge. A stuga stay works as a base for hiking Skuleskogen's marked trails, kayaking between the skerries, or just swimming off the rocks on a warm July evening. Stockholm is a full day's drive north, so this is a destination you plan a proper trip around rather than a weekend add-on.

What's a stuga, and what should I expect?
Stuga is simply the Swedish word for a cabin or cottage — here it usually means a small, red-painted wooden house right at the water's edge, close to old boathouses and a jetty rather than a hotel-style resort.
How far is it from Stockholm?
About 5 hours by car. It's a genuine road-trip destination rather than a quick weekend hop, so most visitors combine it with other stops along Sweden's east coast.
