Tiny houses & cabins in San Ignacio (Cayo)

San Ignacio's tiny cabanas cluster along the Macal River in the hills of Belize's inland Cayo District, mostly one- or two-room wooden cabins raised over the jungle floor, with fans or AC against the heat and a porch to watch the river below. This is the base camp for Belize's big ruins runs: Xunantunich's temple rises just across the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry, Caracol's pyramids sit deeper in the forest near the Guatemalan border, and the ATM cave's wade-in tunnels and Maya artefacts are a half-day trip from town.

Days here run to river and cave rather than beach: canoeing the Macal past iguanas and toucans, cave tubing through limestone tunnels, or a horseback ride to a jungle waterfall. San Ignacio itself is a proper small town with a Saturday market and enough restaurants to eat well after a day outdoors, and Belize City is under two hours away by road if you're arriving from the coast.
