San Ignacio's tiny cabanas cluster along the Macal River in the hills of Belize's inland Cayo District, mostly one- or two-room wooden cabins raised over the jungle floor, with fans or AC against the heat and a porch to watch the river below. This is the base camp for Belize's big ruins runs: Xunantunich's temple rises just across the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry, Caracol's pyramids sit deeper in the forest near the Guatemalan border, and the ATM cave's wade-in tunnels and Maya artefacts are a half-day trip from town.
Days here run to river and cave rather than beach: canoeing the Macal past iguanas and toucans, cave tubing through limestone tunnels, or a horseback ride to a jungle waterfall. San Ignacio itself is a proper small town with a Saturday market and enough restaurants to eat well after a day outdoors, and Belize City is under two hours away by road if you're arriving from the coast.

Why stay in a cabana around San Ignacio rather than in town?
The cabins sit right on the Macal River in the forest, so you wake up to birdsong and howler monkeys rather than traffic, and you're already closer to Xunantunich, Caracol and the ATM cave than if you were based on the coast.
Do I need a car in Cayo District?
It helps but isn't essential — San Ignacio is well connected by shared shuttles and tour operators who collect guests directly from their cabin for day trips to the ruins and caves; a rental car gives you more freedom to explore at your own pace.
When's the best time to visit, and does the rain matter?
November to May is the dry season and by far the easier time to visit — trails and cave entrances stay passable and river levels are predictable. From June the rains pick up; the Macal can rise fast after heavy storms, so cave tubing and river trips get cancelled more often in the wet months.
