At around 1,200 metres, Constanza is the highest valley in the Caribbean, and it looks the part: strawberry fields and flower farms fill the valley floor between pine-covered ridges, an odd sight this close to the tropics. Cabins and a handful of container conversions are scattered around the valley, within reach of the Aguas Blancas waterfall and the high pine forest of Valle Nuevo National Park.
Nights here can drop close to freezing, which is unheard of almost anywhere else in the Caribbean, so pack proper warm layers rather than beachwear. It is about 3 hours from Santo Domingo on mountain roads, further than Jarabacoa and quieter for it. Strawberry-farm visits, waterfall hikes and clear-sky stargazing fill the days; November to April brings the driest weather and the best chance of a cold, clear night.

Why is Constanza called the highest valley in the Caribbean?
The valley sits at around 1,200 metres in the Dominican Republic's central mountains, high enough that strawberries and flowers are grown commercially here instead of tropical crops.
How cold does it actually get?
Nights can drop close to freezing, especially between December and February — pack warm layers, not just a jacket, if you're used to Caribbean beach weather.
What is there to do besides enjoying the cool climate?
Hiking to the Aguas Blancas waterfall, visiting the strawberry farms that fill the valley, and stargazing — the clear mountain air and lack of light pollution make for some of the best night skies in the region.
