Jebel Shams is Oman's highest point, and the reason people come is the Balcony Walk - a trail that traces the rim of a canyon deep enough that locals call it Arabia's answer to the Grand Canyon. The handful of stays up here are domes and one simple cabin, perched right at the canyon edge in Wadi Ghul village, built for guests who want to wake up and step straight onto the trail.
With only four listings and an average of 144 euros a night, this is a small, specific market - book ahead, especially around the cooler months. Days go entirely to the rim trail and the viewpoints over the gorge; the nearby Al Hoota Cave is worth the detour on a rest day. Nights get properly cold even when Muscat below is warm, since you're at altitude on exposed rock with nothing to hold the heat.

What is there to do at Jebel Shams besides look at the canyon?
The Balcony Walk rim trail is the main draw, plus a detour to Al Hoota Cave and stargazing after dark - there's little beyond that, and that's rather the point.
When should I visit?
September to May; the domes and cabin sit exposed at altitude, so summer days are punishing and winter nights are cold enough to need real bedding.
How far is it from Muscat?
About 2.5 hours by road, with the last stretch on a paved but winding mountain route - no 4x4 required here, unlike neighboring Jebel Akhdar.
