Tiny houses & cabins in the Serra da Mantiqueira

The Serra da Mantiqueira runs along the border of Minas Gerais and São Paulo states, and Gonçalves, at around 1,350 meters, sits close to Monte Verde, its better-known neighbor, both about three hours by car from São Paulo. This is Brazil's coldest inhabited region outside the far south: July nights can drop well below freezing, and locals talk about frost on the grass the way people elsewhere talk about heat waves.

Hiking is the main draw. Pedra do Forno, a rock outcrop at nearly 2,000 meters with a small chapel at its summit, is reached by a trail of a little over an hour through forest from the Terra Fria neighborhood outside Gonçalves. Monte Verde adds its own network of trails and lookout points, along with a European-village aesthetic of chalet-style architecture that has made it a honeymoon and chocolate-shop destination.

Small lodging in both villages leans heavily on chalés and refúgios built for the cold: wood-burning stoves, thick duvets, and fireplaces are standard rather than a luxury add-on. Trout farms and strawberry-and-cream cafés round out a food scene built for cool-weather comfort.

June and July are the coldest and busiest months, when Paulistas escape the city for a taste of winter; the rest of the year is milder and considerably quieter.
