about 7 km from Tapalpa · Forest
Tapalpa sits at just over 2,000 meters in a belt of pine forest two hours south of Guadalajara, Jalisco’s oldest Pueblo Mágico and its coolest escape from the coastal heat. Cabins and cabañas cluster along the ridges above town, built for wood-smoke evenings and views over the sierra.

2 hrs south of Guadalajara; direct buses from the main terminal.
Cool pine highland above 2,000 m; coldest nights Dec.–Feb., rain Jun.–Sep.
Tapalpa was named Jalisco's first Pueblo Mágico in 2002, and the title fits: cobbled streets, tiled roofs, and a plaza ringed by pine-covered hills. The town sits at roughly 2,050 meters, which means cool mornings even in the dry season and log fires most nights of the year. It's a two-hour drive from Guadalajara on the road toward Colima, close enough for a weekend but high enough to feel like a different climate zone entirely.
The landscape does a lot of the work here. Las Piedrotas, a field of house-sized granite boulders scattered across a meadow outside town, draws hikers and picnickers by the busload on weekends but empties out midweek. Presa del Nogal, a reservoir a short drive away, is where locals go for trout, kayaking, and lakeside asado. Waterfalls at Salto del Nogal and the Chorros del Varal round out the day-trip options.
Cabañas built from local pine are the dominant style of small lodging around Tapalpa, often perched on a slope with a wood stove and a porch facing the valley. Sarapes, ponchos, and dulces de leche are sold along the main square, a reminder that this is still a working ranching town rather than a resort built for tourists.
Weekdays are quieter and cheaper; December through February brings the coldest nights, sometimes near freezing, while the rainy season from June to September turns the hills a deep green.

See all stays in Tapalpa on Booking.comIncludes hotels and apartments, not only tiny houses.
Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.
Your booking completes on Booking.com or Vrbo at their price. The atlas earns a small commission, at no cost to you.
By car it's about two hours south on the road toward Ciudad Guzmán and then west into the mountains; buses run from Guadalajara's Central Nueva bus station, with a change in Ciudad Guzmán depending on the operator.
Nights are cool year-round because of the altitude, and December to February can dip close to freezing, so pack a warm layer even in the dry season.
Las Piedrotas boulder field, Presa del Nogal reservoir, and the Salto del Nogal waterfall are the three most popular day trips, all reachable by car or local taxi in under 30 minutes.
The town center is easily walkable, but a car, or a local taxi arranged in advance, makes it much easier to reach Las Piedrotas and Presa del Nogal, which sit several kilometers outside town.
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
