Glamping huts sit at the tree line below Durmitor, a UNESCO-listed massif of jagged limestone peaks ringing the glacial Black Lake, in Montenegro's far north. The ski town of Žabljak, Montenegro's highest, is the gateway — a small, no-frills base with the mountains rising straight out of its backyard. Just beyond, the Tara River has carved the deepest canyon in Europe, a green-water gorge over a thousand metres deep in places.
Summer here is short and intense: trails around the Black Lake and up toward Bobotov Kuk fill with hikers, rafting trips run the Tara's white water, and the evenings stay cool even in August. It's a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Podgorica, further than the coast, but the payoff is one of the wildest corners of the Balkans, largely free of the crowds that pack the Adriatic in summer.

What makes Durmitor worth the trip?
It's a UNESCO World Heritage mountain park built around jagged peaks, the glacial Black Lake and the Tara Canyon — Europe's deepest gorge — with hiking, rafting and zip-lining all within a short drive of the huts around Žabljak.
Is Durmitor a summer or winter destination?
Both, in different ways. June to September is best for hiking, rafting and lake walks; December to March turns Žabljak into a modest ski resort, though summer is when most glamping huts are open and busiest.
How far is it from the coast or Podgorica?
About 3.5 hours by car from Podgorica, and further still from the coastal towns, so most visitors treat it as a dedicated mountain trip rather than a day out from the Adriatic.
