Log cabins scatter through the dense spruce and pine forest of Tara National Park, high above the Drina river gorge in western Serbia. Locals call these timber cabins brvnare, and the design here is unmistakable: thick round logs, steep roofs built for snow, and a wood stove for the cool mountain nights. Most sit within walking distance of Banjska Stena, a viewpoint that drops away in a sheer cliff face to the green-blue Drina far below — one of the most photographed spots in the country.

The park itself is one of Serbia's last stretches of old-growth forest, home to Zaovine Lake and trailheads that wind for hours under the pines without crossing a road. Rafting trips launch from the Drina and Tara canyons nearby, and Perućac and Bajina Bašta make easy day trips down in the valley. It's a four-hour drive from Belgrade, longer than some other Serbian getaways, which is exactly why it still feels remote.

Good to know

What's a brvnara?

It's the Serbian word for a log cabin — solid timber walls, a pitched roof and usually a wood stove, the standard style of stay in Tara National Park. Most sleep two to six and are built to handle the mountain cold.

Do I need a car to reach Tara?

Yes. It's about a 4-hour drive from Belgrade and there's no train service into the park itself; a car also makes it much easier to reach Banjska Stena, Zaovine Lake and the rafting put-in points scattered around the forest.

When is the best time to visit?

May through October gives the mildest hiking weather and the clearest views from Banjska Stena; July and August are busiest with domestic tourists, so shoulder-season months are quieter if you want the forest to yourself.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
