Huaraz is Peru's trekking capital, sitting in a valley facing the Cordillera Blanca - a wall of glaciated 6,000-metre peaks that includes some of the most photographed trekking scenery in South America. The tiny cabin stock here is small and basic, built by and for the trekking crowd heading up to Laguna 69 or into Huascaran National Park, not resort-style stays.
At around 46 euros a night, these cabins are priced for backpackers and trekkers rather than luxury travelers, and the town itself works the same way - gear shops, guide offices and acclimatization walks rather than spas. May to September is the dry season and the only real trekking window; outside it, trails to the glacial lakes become unreliable and often close. Getting here takes commitment: a 7-hour bus from Lima, or a 30-minute flight to nearby Anta if you want to skip the road.
