Tiny houses & cabins in Oxapampa

Oxapampa looks like it wandered in from the Alps and settled in the middle of Peru's central cloud forest. Austrian and German colonists founded the town in the 1850s after arriving overland from Pozuzo, and timber balconies and steep gabled roofs still line its streets. Mist moves through the trees most mornings, the edge of Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park starts a few blocks from the plaza, and toucans and the odd cock-of-the-rock turn up on short walks into the forest.

Most of the cabañas here are timber cabins built into the hillsides just outside town, roomy enough to include a kitchen and a living area rather than a single bunk — one listing near town even runs to a full kitchen, living room and laundry, just five kilometres from the centre. Cabaña Monte Santo and the Hassinger Ranch cabins are typical: family-run, built for groups, close enough for a coffee-farm visit or the walk to San Alberto waterfall before dinner. A couple of tipis round out the options for something less conventional. At an average of 68 EUR a night, it is inexpensive for a private cabin with a kitchen.
