Ifrane confounds every expectation of Morocco: a town of steep gabled roofs and stork nests at 1,665 m, built by the French in 1928 and kept immaculate ever since. The chalets here are the real thing — small wooden houses with fireplaces on farms and orchards between Ifrane, Ben Smim and Azrou, where nights are cold enough for a wood stove most of the year. In January you may need snow chains; in July the mountain air is the reason Moroccan families flee the heat of Fès up here.
The setting is what you come for: the largest cedar forest in Africa starts just outside Azrou, home to Barbary macaques you will meet on any walk, and a string of volcanic lakes — Dayet Aoua, Dayet Ifrah — threads the plateau north of town. Days fill with forest hikes, lake loops and trout lunches; in winter there is even skiing at Michlifen. It is the one region of Morocco where a cabin holiday feels genuinely alpine.

The region works year-round: June to September brings cool mountain relief from the lowland heat, October paints the forests, and December to February usually delivers real snow — magical with a fireplace, but check road conditions.
Fès airport is about an hour away by car; grand taxis and CTM buses run from Fès and Meknès. A rental car is worth it here — the chalets, lakes and cedar forest are spread across the plateau.
Mostly small wooden chalets — on farms, in orchards or at the forest edge — with fireplaces or wood stoves, plus a few Scandinavian-style cabins on eco farms near Ben Smim. Book ahead for snow weekends and Moroccan school holidays.
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
