Karuizawa has drawn Japan's city dwellers uphill for well over a century, and its small stays today — design cottages and the odd A-frame tucked among larch trees at 1,000 metres — carry on that tradition rather than starting a new one. The town splits neatly into old and new: Old Karuizawa Ginza's shopping street dates back to the original retreat era, while newer design cabins spread through the surrounding forest on quiet lanes built for bicycles.
A day here moves at cycling pace: out past Kumoba Pond and its ring of red maples, on to Shiraito Falls where thin curtains of water fan out over a wide rock face, and back through outlet malls if shopping is part of the plan. Tokyo is close enough that a stay here works as an easy two- or three-day escape rather than a major trip.

It's been Japan's classic summer retreat since the late 1800s, so the infrastructure for a relaxed stay — cycling paths, cafés, walking trails — is long established rather than newly built for tourism, and the forest cabins here reflect that older, design-led retreat culture.
How do you get there, and do you need a car?
The Shinkansen from Tokyo takes about an hour to Karuizawa Station, and a car isn't really necessary — the town and its cabins are built around cycling and walking distances, with rental bikes widely available near the station.
When's the best time to visit?
May to October covers the mild, green months, with the forest at its fullest and Shiraito Falls running strong; winters bring snow and a much colder, quieter version of the town, which some visitors prefer for that reason.
