Laguna de Apoyo fills an old volcanic crater between Granada and Masaya, and its handful of small cabins sit right down at the waterline under forest thick enough that howler monkeys carry across the water at dawn. The lake itself is the draw: fed by underground springs rather than run-off, it stays warm as a bath year-round and clear enough to see well below the surface.
Days here are unhurried by design — swimming and kayaking straight off the shore, with Masaya Volcano National Park and its smoking crater a short drive away, and Granada's colonial streets close enough for an easy day trip. It's one of the quietest bases in this part of Nicaragua, chosen as much for the lake as for what's nearby.

What makes Laguna de Apoyo different from Nicaragua's other lakes?
It's a crater lake fed by underground springs, so it's warm, clear and free of the currents and boat traffic of Lake Nicaragua — the swimming here is calmer and the water noticeably cleaner.
How far is it from Granada, and do I need a car?
About 45 minutes from Granada by road. A car helps for side trips to Masaya, but shuttles and taxis run regularly between Granada and the lake, so it's easy to visit or stay without one.
Is there a rainy season to plan around?
Yes — November to May is dry and the easiest time to visit, with clear water and settled weather. From June the rains build; afternoons can bring short, heavy downpours, though the lake itself stays swimmable and howler monkeys tend to get noisier just before a storm.
