Arenal's near-perfect cone dominates every view here, even though the volcano has been quiet since 2010. La Fortuna town works as a base for the things that made this valley famous: the roughly 70-metre La Fortuna waterfall, where a steep staircase drops you into a cold swimming hole; the suspended walkways at Mistico Park, strung through rainforest canopy with volcano views; and hot springs fed by underground activity, from developed resorts to free riverside soaking spots. Lake Arenal, formed by a 1970s dam, adds kayaking and sunset views to the mix. Tiny-house stays cluster on the jungle slopes outside town — geodesic domes with volcano-facing decks, wooden cabinas, and rainforest casitas on stilts.

Dry season (December–April) gives the clearest volcano views and easiest hiking; the rest of the year is greener and quieter, with brief afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. A rental car helps for reaching outlying lodges, though shuttles cover the main attractions well.

2632 stays, each hand-checked

Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

1484 verified by research

These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.

Good to know

Do you need a car in La Fortuna?

Not strictly — the town is walkable and shuttle vans connect the waterfall, hanging bridges, and hot springs. But a rental car saves time and is the only practical way to reach lodges on the outer jungle roads.

When is Arenal volcano visible without clouds?

Dry season mornings (December–April, especially January–March) give the best odds — cloud cover builds through the day, and in rainy season the cone disappears almost every afternoon. Early risers get the clearest views.

Is the hike to La Fortuna waterfall worth it?

Yes, though the descent is roughly 500 steps down a steep staircase (and back up). The reward is a cold, deep pool at the base of the roughly 70-metre falls, good for swimming.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
