Tiny houses & cabins in Bijagua at Tenorio Volcano

Bijagua is the quiet approach to Tenorio Volcano National Park and the turquoise Río Celeste, a farming village thirty minutes from the park gate instead of the tourist strip of La Fortuna. Domes and cabinas sit among cattle pasture and rainforest at the foot of the volcano.

Getting there

1.5 hrs from Liberia airport, 3 hrs from San José.

Climate

Warm, humid rainforest all year; driest Jan.–Apr., clearest in the morning.

Most visitors to Río Celeste base themselves in La Fortuna, an hour and a half to two hours away by road on the far side of Lake Arenal. Bijagua sits far closer, about 25 to 30 minutes from the Tenorio Volcano National Park entrance, and stays a working agricultural village rather than a tourism hub, which keeps prices lower and the pace slower.

The park's main draw is the Río Celeste itself, a river that turns a milky sky-blue where two clear streams meet and mix minerals, a phenomenon caused by light scattering rather than dye or pollution. The hike to the waterfall and the blue lagoon takes two to three hours round trip through humid forest thick with birdlife, including toucans and, with luck, the resplendent quetzal in the cooler months.

Domes and simple cabinas around Bijagua tend to open onto pasture with a direct view of Tenorio or the neighboring Volcán Miravalles, favoring screened porches and hammocks over air conditioning, since nights here are comfortable rather than sweltering. A handful of small farms in the area also run cacao and coffee tours.

Trails inside the park can close temporarily after heavy rain, so checking conditions the day before a visit is worth the five minutes it takes.

Good to know

How far is Bijagua from La Fortuna?

About 70 kilometers, which usually takes an hour and a half to two hours by car around Lake Arenal; Bijagua itself sits much closer to Tenorio, only 25 to 30 minutes from the park entrance.

What makes the Río Celeste blue?

The sky-blue color appears where two clear rivers meet and their mineral content scatters light in a way that makes the water look milky turquoise; it isn't a dye or pollution.

How long is the hike to Río Celeste waterfall?

The main trail to the waterfall and blue lagoon takes roughly two to three hours round trip, on a well-marked but sometimes muddy forest path.

Is Bijagua a good alternative to La Fortuna?

Yes, for visiting Río Celeste specifically, Bijagua is closer to the park, quieter, and generally cheaper, though La Fortuna has more restaurants, hot springs, and nightlife if that matters more to you.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
