Costa Ballena — the 'whale coast' — takes its name from Marino Ballena National Park, where a sandbar off Punta Uvita forms a whale's-tail silhouette at low tide. Humpbacks show up twice a year here: a southern-hemisphere pod July–November, peaking around Uvita's Whale Festival in early September, and a northern-hemisphere pod December–April — one of the longest whale-watching windows anywhere. Ten minutes north, Dominical keeps a scruffier surf-town feel with reliable beach breaks. Inland, the Nauyaca waterfalls drop in two tiers, reachable by hike or horseback. Tiny-house stays here mean jungle cabins on the hillsides above Dominical and Uvita, several with ocean-view decks looking straight down the coast.
Weather is hot and humid year-round, with a real rainy season May–November; December–April is drier and sunnier, though the peak whale months (August–September) fall mid-rainy-season, so many visitors trade a few showers for the sightings.

Why book through the atlas
Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.
Your booking completes on Booking.com or Vrbo at their price. The atlas earns a small commission, at no cost to you.
Good to know
When can you see whales in Uvita?
Two overlapping seasons: humpbacks from the southern hemisphere arrive July–November, peaking in August–September around Uvita's early-September Whale Festival, and a northern-hemisphere pod passes through December–April. No single boat trip guarantees a sighting, but the odds are good in peak months.
Is Dominical or Uvita better for surfing?
Dominical has the more consistent, higher-volume beach break and a longer-standing surf culture, with boards for rent right on the sand. Uvita's surf is milder and more scattered — better suited to beginners taking lessons than to experienced surfers chasing swell.
How do you get to the Nauyaca waterfalls?
Most visitors book a horseback or 4x4 tour from Dominical, since the access road is rough; a hiking trail also exists but takes a full morning round-trip in humid heat. Both the upper and lower falls have swimmable pools.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
