Tiny houses & cabins in San Gerardo de Dota

The turnoff comes on the Pan-American Highway south of San José, right at the Cerro de la Muerte, a 3,451-meter peak whose name (Hill of Death) refers to old travelers who once froze crossing it on foot. From there a steep, winding road drops about 9 kilometers into the valley, losing enough elevation that oak cloud forest replaces the páramo scrub above.

The main reason people come is the resplendent quetzal, and Parque Nacional Los Quetzales, along with several private reserves in the valley, offer some of the most reliable sightings in Central America, especially during the March-to-May nesting season when males grow their long tail streamers. Guides here know individual trees where quetzals return year after year to feed on wild avocados.

The Savegre River itself supports a small trout-fishing tradition introduced decades ago, and several family-run trout farms serve fish caught that morning. At 2,200 meters, nights are cold enough for frost on the grass, unusual for a country better known for beaches, and cabinas typically come with wood stoves, hot water, and thick bedding as standard rather than an upgrade.

San José is about two hours north by car, making San Gerardo de Dota an easy add-on to a broader Costa Rica itinerary rather than a remote outpost.
