Ometepe rises out of Lake Nicaragua as two volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus, and the handful of tiny stays here — cabins and treehouses on old coffee fincas — sit low in the shadow of Concepción and Maderas rather than on any kind of resort strip. Petroglyphs carved by pre-Columbian communities turn up on boulders around the island's farms, and the natural spring pool of Ojo de Agua, cold and clear, is a short drive from most stays.
Days split between the two volcanoes: Concepción's bare cone is a demanding full-day climb, while Maderas hides a crater lake in cloud forest and an easier network of trails. Kayaking the Rio Istian's mangrove channels and touring a working coffee finca fill the rest of the time, and everything on the island, including getting there, runs at ferry speed rather than highway speed.

How do you actually get to Ometepe?
By ferry from San Jorge, on the mainland near Rivas — the crossing takes about an hour and lands at either Moyogalpa or San Jorge's twin port, Altagracia, depending on the boat; from there it's a short taxi or moto-taxi to most tiny-house stays.
Is a car needed to get around the island?
Not strictly — Ometepe has one paved ring road and moto-taxis and shared trucks cover most of it, but if you're planning to explore both volcano sides in the same trip, a rental car or scooter saves a lot of waiting around.
When's the best time to visit, and how does the weather affect ferries?
November to May is the dry season and the reliable window — trails are firm and ferries run close to schedule. In the wetter months from June, Lake Nicaragua can get choppy enough to delay or cancel crossings, so it's worth building in slack if you're travelling then.
