Best time

December–March

Getting there

50 min by jeep or moto-taxi from Santa Marta.

Climate

Warm but cooler than the coast; driest Dec.–Mar. and Jun.–Jul.

At around 650 meters, Minca sits just high enough to escape the coastal heat of Santa Marta, 13 kilometers and about 50 minutes away by jeep or moto-taxi along a winding mountain road. It's a former coffee and cacao hub, and small farms around town still process beans the traditional way, with tours and tastings offered on an informal, walk-in basis.

Two waterfalls anchor most itineraries. Marinka Falls, roughly 3.5 kilometers from the village center, is a short, popular hike past two tiered drops good for swimming. Pozo Azul, a bit further and less visited, takes about an hour to reach on foot and rewards the walk with a quieter pool. Both sit inside the buffer zone of the Sierra Nevada, South America's highest coastal mountain range.

Birdwatchers come for the hummingbirds at feeders set up around several lodges and reserves near town, part of the wider draw of the Sierra Nevada as one of the most bird-rich regions on the continent. Small hostels and cabañas dominate the accommodation scene, many built into the hillside with open-air decks and mosquito netting rather than glass and air conditioning.

The dry season from December to March and again in June and July makes for easier hiking; the rest of the year brings heavier, if shorter, afternoon downpours.

Good to know

How do you get from Santa Marta to Minca?

What is the best time to visit Minca?

The driest stretches run from December to March and again in June and July, which makes hiking to the waterfalls easier; the rest of the year sees more frequent afternoon rain.

Which waterfall is better, Marinka or Pozo Azul?

Marinka is closer to the village and easier to reach, making it the more popular choice, while Pozo Azul requires about an hour's walk but tends to be quieter.

Is Minca cooler than Santa Marta?

Yes, at around 650 meters, Minca is noticeably cooler and greener than the coastal city below, though it's still warm enough that light clothing works most of the day.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
