Desert
April–November In season now
1.5 hrs north of San Salvador de Jujuy on RN 9.
High desert at 2,450 m; fierce sun, cold nights, rain Dec.–Feb.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca cuts north from Jujuy province toward the Bolivian border, and Tilcara is its liveliest base: a grid of adobe houses, a busy artisan market, and the Pucará, a pre-Inca hilltop fortress built by the Omaguaca people between the 12th and 13th centuries, its stone walls looking out over the confluence of two rivers. The town sits at close to 2,500 meters, high enough that the air feels thin and the sun bites even on cool days.
Purmamarca, twenty minutes away by car, holds the Cerro de los Siete Colores, the banded, seven-hued hillside that appears on half the postcards from northern Argentina. Humahuaca itself, further up the valley, adds a colonial church and another layer of Andean market life. All three towns are easily combined into a single day, with Tilcara making the most comfortable overnight stop.
Cabañas and small posadas here favor adobe walls, exposed beams, and thick blankets, a practical response to nights that drop sharply once the sun goes down. Days are dry and intensely bright; altitude sickness is a real consideration for anyone arriving straight from sea level, so a slow first day is worth planning.
Late April through October avoids the summer rains, when flash floods can close roads through the Quebrada.

At close to 2,500 meters, mild altitude effects like headaches or shortness of breath are common on the first day, so most visitors plan a quiet arrival day and drink plenty of water before hiking.
The dry season from April to October brings stable weather and clear views; the summer months of January and February bring rain that can occasionally close roads in the Quebrada.
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 5517 hand-checked small stays across 485 destinations in 79 countries — 3731 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
