Tiny House Atlas

Tiny houses in the Wendland

The Wendland is the north-eastern corner of Lower Saxony, between the Elbe and the former inner-German border: round villages of half-timbered farmhouses around Lüchow, the river meadows of the Lower Saxon Elbe Valley biosphere reserve at Hitzacker and Dannenberg, and the pine woods around Gartow. It is the least populated district in the state, with cranes on the fields in autumn and the Kulturelle Landpartie open-studio festival at Whitsun. Tiny houses here are few: a small tiny-house village on the edge of Gartow and single houses in village gardens, no resorts.

Getting there

About 2 hrs from Hamburg, 2.5 hrs from Berlin by car; regional trains from Lüneburg to Hitzacker and Dannenberg Ost.

Climate

Continental; warm, fairly dry summers.

The Wendland is the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, the north-eastern tip of Lower Saxony. The Elbe forms its northern and eastern edge, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg lie across the river and the old border, and for forty years the whole area sat in the shadow of the inner-German border. That isolation is why it looks the way it does: around Lüchow more than a hundred round villages (Rundlinge) survive, horseshoes of half-timbered farmhouses with their gables turned to a central green, and the open-air museum in Lübeln shows how they worked. Along the river the Lower Saxon Elbe Valley biosphere reserve stretches from Schnackenburg past Dannenberg to Hitzacker, a small half-timbered town on an island between the Elbe and the Jeetzel. In autumn cranes rest on the floodplain meadows by the thousand.

Tiny houses here are a small, recent addition rather than a scene. On the edge of Gartow, a few minutes from the lake and the pine woods of the Gartow forest, a village of five tiny houses of 35 m² each takes two guests apiece, with terraces and a shared yard. Outside Lüchow, in the hamlet of Untergut, a renovated one-bedroom house of 50 m² stands in its own garden with a terrace. Most other rentals in the district are apartments in converted farmhouses. The Elbe Cycle Route runs along the whole river edge, canoes can be hired on the Jeetzel at Lüchow, and around Whitsun the Kulturelle Landpartie opens studios and barns across the villages.

Good to know

Where exactly is the Wendland?

The Hanoverian Wendland is the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in the far north-east of Lower Saxony. The Elbe borders it to the north and east; Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg lie across the river. The towns are Lüchow, Dannenberg and Hitzacker; Gartow is the eastern corner by the lake.

What kind of tiny houses are there in the Wendland?

Only a few, all small-scale: a tiny-house village of five 35 m² houses for two in Gartow, and a 50 m² one-bedroom holiday house with garden in a hamlet outside Lüchow. Most other rentals in the district are apartments in converted farmhouses, which the atlas does not list.

What is there to do in the Wendland?

Cycle the Elbe Cycle Route between Hitzacker and Schnackenburg, visit the round villages and the Rundlingsmuseum in Lübeln, swim in the Gartower See, paddle the Jeetzel from Lüchow, watch cranes on the Elbe meadows in October and November, and visit open studios during the Kulturelle Landpartie around Whitsun.

How do I get to the Wendland?

By car it is about 2 hours from Hamburg and 2.5 hours from Berlin. Regional trains run from Lüneburg to Hitzacker and Dannenberg Ost; Salzwedel station on the Stendal–Uelzen line is about 15 km from Lüchow. Within the district you need a car or a bike.

How we choose what counts as a tiny house

Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.

The atlas currently lists 5787 hand-checked small stays across 489 destinations in 79 countries — 4001 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.

Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
