The Jacques-Cartier valley is Quebec City's wilderness next door — a glacial trench cut 550 metres deep into a boreal plateau, thirty minutes from downtown. Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is the reason people come: the Jacques-Cartier River runs cold and clear along the valley floor, with five marked canoe routes and a shuttle service that lets you paddle one way and get picked up at the other end. Domes and mini-chalets cluster around Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury, tucked between spruce and birch on the plateau above the valley, close enough to walk or drive down for a morning paddle and back for dinner. Station touristique Stoneham, one of the ski hills closest to Quebec City, keeps the area busy all winter with night skiing lit up against the dark tree line.

Snow arrives early and stays late here — the plateau sits high enough that the park runs cross-country and telemark skiing, snowshoeing and backcountry routes across more than 200 hectares from December into April. Summer favours the river: canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the calmer stretches, hiking up to the valley's lookout points for a full view of the glacial scar below. The drive from Quebec City is short and paved the whole way — Highway 73 north to Stoneham, then local roads into the park, no need for a 4x4 even in winter.
