Tiny houses in Ottawa Valley & Calabogie

The Ottawa Valley around Calabogie has a split personality that most cottage country doesn't: it's a lake town in summer and a ski town in winter, with Calabogie Peaks Resort holding the highest vertical drop of any public hill in Ontario at 238 metres. Tiny houses and Scandinavian-style hytte cabins are scattered through the hardwood ridges above Calabogie Lake and along the Madawaska River, many just a short paddle or forest-trail walk from the water. The old K&P rail line — the Kingston & Pembroke, abandoned decades ago — now runs as a crushed-gravel trail straight through the village, used for cycling and hiking in summer and cross-country skiing once the snow sets in, and Madawaska Nordic's 18 kilometres of groomed trails are minutes from most hideaways.

Ottawa is barely an hour east via Highway 7 and Highway 508, which makes this one of the easiest wilderness escapes for anyone based in the capital. Summers mean swimming and canoeing on Calabogie Lake and paddling the Madawaska's calmer stretches; October brings the valley's hardwood forests — maple, birch, oak — into a full run of red and gold that draws day-trippers from Ottawa on weekends. Winter turns serious fast: Calabogie Peaks runs lifts from December into March, and most tiny houses stay open and cozy through the cold with wood stoves rather than closing down like more remote cottage regions.
