Lanaudière's Matawinie hills earned their reputation as Quebec's mini-chalet heartland the practical way — hundreds of small cabins, most with a wood stove and a riverside hot tub, tucked into forest an hour and a half from Montreal. Saint-Côme is the anchor village, a scatter of gas stations and poutine counters that fills up every ski weekend. The Parc régional de la Chute-à-Bull is the local landmark: an 18-metre waterfall reached via the Belvédère trail and its covered bridge, with smaller cascades and swimming holes strung along the same river most of the spa-chalets sit on. A short drive further, the Parc régional du Lac Taureau adds a genuine lake — sandy beach, canoe rentals, a marina — for the warmer months.
Winter is when Lanaudière really performs. Val Saint-Côme, one of the province's largest ski hills and a stop on the Freestyle Skiing World Cup circuit, keeps the village full from December through March, and groomed snowmobile trails link straight out from many properties — some chalets are reachable only that way once the snow sets in. Summer brings hiking on the Sentier national and the same rivers for tubing and swimming. The drive from Montreal is straightforward: Highway 40 to Route 131 north, about 100 km, no ferry or gravel road involved.

Why book through the atlas
Every place is checked by name and type before it goes live — no hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
These stays we confirmed with an outside source on top, and amenities like hot tubs count only once verified — never guessed.
Your booking completes on Booking.com or Vrbo at their price. The atlas earns a small commission, at no cost to you.
Good to know
When is the best time to visit Lanaudière for a mini-chalet stay?
Winter (December to March) is Lanaudière's signature season — Val Saint-Côme draws skiers and snowmobile trails run straight from many chalet doors. July and August are quieter and warmer, good for swimming below the Chute-à-Bull falls and canoeing on Lac Taureau.
How do I get to Saint-Côme from Montreal?
It's about 1.5 hours by car: Highway 40 east, then Route 131 north through Saint-Côme's neighbouring towns. There's no train or bus service to the chalets themselves, so a car is essential.
Are the spa-chalets in Lanaudière open and accessible in winter?
Most are — many mini-chalets here are built specifically for winter, with wood stoves, insulated construction and riverside hot tubs meant to be used in the snow. Some properties near Val Saint-Côme are snowmobile-access only once trails are packed, so check with the host before booking a car-only stay in January.
How we choose what counts as a tiny house
Booking sites don’t have a “tiny house” category — they file these stays under the generic “Accommodation” label. So we check every place by name and type and list only genuine free-standing small homes: tiny houses (on wheels or fixed), cabins, glamping pods, shepherd huts, yurts, domes and tree houses. No hotel rooms, no ordinary apartments.
The atlas currently lists 2632 hand-checked small stays across 363 destinations in 75 countries — 1484 of them additionally verified through independent research with a documented source.
Prices and availability come from our booking partners and can change at any time. Booking links are affiliate links — booking through them supports this site at no extra cost to you. Property type is checked from the listing name and category; if you spot a mistake, let us know.
