Tiny houses in Mauricie

Saint-Alexis-des-Monts sits in pourvoirie country — the traditional Quebec hunting-and-fishing lodge belt, where outfits like the Pourvoirie du Lac Blanc and the Réserve faunique Mastigouche have been renting cabins on private lakes for generations, long before "tiny house" was a marketing term. The mini-chalets and cabins here follow that lineage: small, wood-heated, usually with a canoe included and a lake to themselves rather than a shared beach. Parc national de la Mauricie is the main draw, a short drive south, with more than 150 lakes and Lac Wapizagonke as its centrepiece — a narrow, cliff-lined lake often called one of the most beautiful in the province, with canoe-camping routes ranging from flat paddles to portage-heavy multi-day trips. Lac Sacacomie, home to the log-built Hôtel Sacacomie, adds another postcard lake nearby with black bear observation tours in season.

Summer and early fall are the main season: warm enough to swim, canoe and fish, with black flies mostly gone by July. Winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through the same forests, though many of the smallest cabins scale back services once the lake freezes. Mauricie sits almost exactly between Montreal and Quebec City, about 1.5 to 2 hours from either — take Highway 40 or 55 to Route 349 or 359 north toward Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, no ferry crossings involved.
