East Texas looks nothing like the Texas of cattle and cactus: the Piney Woods are a belt of loblolly and shortleaf pine that continues into Louisiana and Arkansas. Larue, a small crossroads in Henderson County, sits between Athens and Lake Palestine, a long reservoir on the Neches River used for bass fishing and boating. Tyler, about 40 minutes to the north-east, calls itself the Rose Capital of America, with a municipal rose garden and a rose festival every October, and Tyler State Park has a spring-fed lake ringed by trails through the pines. Dallas is a little under two hours to the north-west.
