Wild Rose is a village of a few hundred people in Waushara County, in the sandy heart of central Wisconsin, where meltwater from the last ice age left a scatter of small, clear lakes such as Silver Lake and Pine Lake among pine and oak woods. The Pine River runs through the village and the Mecan River rises a few miles to the south-west; both are spring-fed trout streams, and the state fish hatchery in Wild Rose raises trout and salmon for Wisconsin’s waters. Summer means swimming, paddling and fishing, autumn turns the oaks red and brown, and Madison and Milwaukee are each about two hours away.
